Youjin B. Chung is Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley with a joint appointment in the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) and the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM). She previously taught at the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University.
She received her PhD and MSc in Development Sociology from Cornell University, and an MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge, Jesus College. She completed a Dual BA in International Studies, and Journalism and Communication from Korea University, with a year abroad at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
Prior to her academic career, she served as a community development volunteer in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and worked at various non-governmental organizations, including ActionAid International (London/Johannesburg) and PhotoVoice (London). She has also consulted for the International Food Security Network (Dhaka/Johannesburg) and the Rights and Resources Initiative (Washington, D.C.).
A native of Seoul, South Korea, Youjin has lived in various parts of Africa, Asia, North America, and Europe. She enjoys discovering new fruits and writing postcards when traveling, and feels passionate about connecting with others through words, photography, and music. She lives in Berkeley with her husband and two cats.
